Cortical Layers
- Gyri (bumps) and sulci (grooves) increase surface area.
- Fissures: deep sulci (e.g., longitudinal fissure, central sulcus, Sylvian fissure).
- Gray matter: neuron cell bodies; white matter: axons.
- Gyrus a bump or potrusion on the brain
- Sulcus the groove
- Bank of Sulcus the side of a groove
- Fundus the bottom of the groove

Cortical Columns
Aside from layers, the brain is also divided into columns Each column refers to some functional unit.
We divide the cortex by major landmarks:
- Central Sulcus
- Lateral Fissure
- Longitudinal Fissure
- Cingulate Sulcus
- Parieto-occiptal Sulcus
Key to know: Sulcus refers to a groove in the brain, Fissue is just a bigger, deeper sulcus lol
